If you've ever had a repair job marked 'complete' when it plainly wasn't, this one's for you. On 18 September 2026 the MOD announced a package of housing reforms designed to give service families more control over their homes and how they're looked after.
What's Changing
- Red Tape Challenge: service personnel and families are being invited to flag the outdated rules and processes that get in the way of living in their homes, so they can be changed or scrapped.
- Repairs sign-off pilot: families will get a bigger role in signing off repairs and maintenance work, so jobs aren't closed until the problem is actually fixed and the work is up to standard.
- Customer Committee: a new national committee giving families a direct voice in housing decisions.
- Regional Experience Committees: residents from across the country brought together to raise local issues and shape future services.
- Code of conduct: a new standard for everyone representing defence housing, contractors included, so you get a consistent and respectful service.
These build on changes already made, including ending restrictions on keeping pets and giving families more freedom to decorate.
The Bigger Picture
It all sits under the £9.2 billion Defence Housing Strategy and will be delivered through the new Defence Housing Service, which becomes formally established in April 2027.
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said: "Service families should not feel that decisions about their homes are made without them. These reforms give families more power and control."
What It Means for You
No changes to accommodation charges have been announced as part of this package. The real value is leverage: a sign-off process and a formal route for complaints and ideas mean you're less reliant on chasing contractors through the chain.
Practical tip while the pilot beds in: photograph every fault and every repair, with dates. If you end up disputing a job or a move-out charge, a paper trail wins arguments.

Get Involved
If there's a rule that drives you mad, the Red Tape Challenge is your chance to say so. You can submit ideas through the form linked in the GOV.UK announcement below. No closing date has been published, so don't sit on it.
